Lancé par la société néerlandaise iRex Technologies, l’iLiad est conçu spécifiquement pour la consultation des journaux électroniques et pour la lecture de livres sur Mobipocket Reader. Il permet aussi de prendre des notes avec un stylet intégré. Produit par la société chinoise Jinke, le Hanlin eReader se décline en plusieurs versions et supporte de nombreux formats, dont les formats PDF, DOC, HTML, MP3, JPG, TXT et ZIP. Lancé en octobre 2006 aux Etats-Unis, le Sony Reader, plus petit que l’iLiad, est vendu au prix de 350 dollars US. La société Bookeen lance pour sa part un nouveau modèle de Cybook en automne 2007. Suite à l’acquisition de Mobipocket en avril 2005, Amazon envisage de participer à la compétition sur un marché émergent et de lancer son propre eBook Reader fin 2007. Reste à voir si ces modèles auront une durée de vie supérieure à celle de leurs prédécesseurs. On attend désormais un écran souple ultrafin appelé papier électronique, qui devrait voir le jour en 2008.
